Minister Pushes for 19 New Earth Dams at Kawu Grazing Reserve

The Kawu Grazing Reserve in Bwari Area Council of Abuja could soon see a major transformation, as the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has proposed the construction of 19 new earth dams in the 2026 budget. The plan follows his recent inspection visit to the reserve, where he stressed the urgent need for improved water and pasture facilities.

According to a statement from Benjamin Bem Goong, Director of Information and Public Relations, the federal government remains committed to building sustainable infrastructure that will boost livestock production while easing tensions between herders and farmers.

Maiha revealed that the proposed dams would serve over 35,000 animals and provide water for irrigation farming, particularly pasture cultivation during the dry season. He noted that the reserve currently relies on just one dam, which is grossly inadequate for the community’s growing needs.

The minister emphasized that once herders have access to reliable water, pasture, and adequate security, they would willingly relocate from city centres to the reserves, reducing the pressure on urban areas and curbing conflicts.

To bring this vision to life, Maiha pledged collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture, and security agencies. He maintained that strengthening facilities at the reserve is key to building a sustainable livestock industry.
