The Federal Government has announced decisive steps to address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s livestock sector, with ₦13 billion already set aside in the 2024 budget and additional support secured from international development partners. The move is seen as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader drive to strengthen food systems and boost national food security.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock, Idris Ajimobi, revealed over the weekend that pilot projects under the livestock development plan are already underway. He explained that these projects will serve as models to be replicated across the country, while critical groundwork and research continue in other states to ensure inclusive growth. “The aim is to complete the pilot project and then scale up to other states. This does not mean we will pause progress elsewhere,” he clarified.
Ajimobi stressed that the administration is treating the livestock sector as a priority in tackling the current food security crisis, pointing out its importance to nutrition, rural livelihoods, and economic growth. According to him, developing the livestock value chain is central to increasing productivity, reducing conflicts between farmers and herders, and creating jobs for young people.
“Livestock is a key driver of food security, and this administration is determined to make Nigeria a food-secure nation,” Ajimobi said, reaffirming that the government is not waiting to act but moving swiftly to deliver tangible results.
