Gombe Leads the Way with Nigeria’s First Ultra-Modern Veterinary Hospital

Gombe State is making a bold leap in livestock development as Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration secures approval for the establishment of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project. This pioneering facility is set to become a major force in improving animal health, training veterinary professionals, and driving research and diagnostics in northern Nigeria.

The announcement was delivered during a high-level visit led by Malam Sanusi Abubakar, the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES. Addressing stakeholders, Abubakar praised the strategic vision behind the project and revealed that Gombe would be the first state in Nigeria to host such an advanced veterinary institution. The hospital will be situated in the expansive 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone—an emerging innovation hub already housing an international livestock market, ultramodern abattoir, tannery, and leather processing facility.

More than a health center for animals, the veterinary hospital is envisioned as a regional anchor for disease surveillance, livestock certification, and the advancement of quality standards in meat and dairy production. Federal officials, animal health specialists, and technical experts accompanying the mission conducted feasibility assessments and expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and vision behind the project.

Malam Abubakar reaffirmed the national office’s commitment to supporting Gombe in making the facility a model for the rest of the country. He described the hospital as a pilot project with the potential to set new benchmarks in livestock care and agribusiness. The decision to site this pioneering institution in Gombe was credited to the state's consistent leadership and forward-thinking investments in agriculture and livestock under Governor Yahaya’s administration.

Leading the delegation through the proposed site, Gombe State L-PRES Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, emphasized the significance of the development, describing it as a historic milestone. He commended the federal authorities for recognizing Gombe’s capacity to lead national innovation in animal health and assured that the state was fully committed to delivering on its promise.

The contractor, Lubell Nigeria Ltd, represented by Project Manager Ms. Asabe, pledged to deliver the project to the highest standard and within the stipulated timeline. She assured stakeholders of full compliance with contractual specifications, signaling that construction will match the hospital’s groundbreaking ambition.

Gombe’s emergence as a center for livestock excellence continues to gather momentum, and this veterinary hospital stands to reinforce its position as a national leader in agricultural transformation.
