FG Launches Strategic Committee to Revamp Nigeria’s Agricultural Value Chain

A new drive to unlock Nigeria’s agricultural potential has begun as the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, inaugurated the Implementation Technical Committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the National Agro-Allied Commodities Cooperatives of Nigeria. The move is aimed at strengthening the agricultural value chain, deepening corporate partnerships, stimulating economic growth, and creating new opportunities for farmers across the country.

Speaking through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi, the Minister assured that the Federal Government is committed to building an enabling environment for agribusiness MSMEs to thrive. He noted that the focus will be on maximising the sector’s potential in production, processing, packaging, marketing, and distribution, while channelling targeted interventions into commodity value chains where Nigeria holds a competitive edge.

Kyari stressed that improving the livelihoods of farmers, boosting trade, increasing investment, earning foreign exchange, and creating jobs are central to the ministry’s mission. He described small-scale producers as the heartbeat of the national economy, warning that without their contributions, agribusiness would wither — and with it, the nation’s agricultural backbone.

Permanent Secretary Ogunbiyi, represented by the Director of Agribusiness and Market Development, Iwara Bassey, said the committee’s work aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places food security and economic growth at the core of national development. Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated body, Julius Akam pledged that the committee will work with urgency and dedication to deliver tangible results for the sector and the millions who depend on it.
