Bauchi Gets 2,000-Litre Milk Collection Centre to Boost Local Dairy Production

A fresh push to transform Nigeria’s dairy industry has reached Bauchi State, where the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has commissioned a Milk Collection Centre capable of handling 2,000 litres daily at the Sawi Grazing Reserve in Adamami, Shira Local Government Area. The facility, rehabilitated under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s Livestock Directorate and now managed by L&Z Integrated Farms, is expected to serve as a game-changer for local milk aggregation and reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on dairy imports.

Director of Livestock Development, Tagwi James, explained that the Sawi Grazing Reserve was chosen for its rich daily milk yield, adding that the project forms part of the federal government’s renewed commitment to meeting Nigeria’s growing dairy demand through local production. He urged state governments to back the effort with policies that will strengthen the livestock sector and improve rural livelihoods.

L&Z Integrated Farms Managing Director, Muhammad Damakka Abubakar, noted that Nigeria spends about $1.5 billion annually on milk imports — a cost the government intends to slash through infrastructure upgrades like this centre and the newly created Ministry of Livestock Development. He emphasised that better milk collection systems are vital to achieving self-sufficiency.

Local leaders welcomed the development as a step toward economic growth and community stability. Shira LGA Chairman, Alhaji Babangida Maliya, assured stakeholders of security support and encouraged pastoralists to supply milk consistently. He also highlighted the importance of education for pastoralist children, calling for measures to reduce school dropouts. District Head of Disina, Alhaji Abdullahi Mustapha, praised the initiative for helping settle pastoralists in one place, while Miyetti Allah Chairman, Umar Muhammad Hassan, pledged quality milk supplies from Fulani herders and appealed for a nomadic school to be established in the community.
