The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) has reaffirmed its commitment to making Nigeria’s livestock sector a leading business hub in Africa. Speaking at the inauguration of the 12th Board of the Council in Abuja, VCN President, Professor Matthew Adamu, declared that the council, with over 72 years of existence, possesses the manpower and political will to revolutionize the industry.
With over 10,000 registered veterinarians and 50,000 veterinary paraprofessionals, the council aims to enforce strict adherence to veterinary regulations, ensuring quality control and industry best practices.

Adamu praised the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, expressing regret that such a move had not been made earlier in Nigeria’s history, as it could have significantly boosted the country’s economic fortunes.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, echoed these sentiments, urging board members to leverage available opportunities to drive innovation and attract investment into the sector.
Drawing from his experience in Brazil, Maiha emphasized that Nigeria must position itself as a global competitor in livestock production. He called on stakeholders to embrace modern veterinary practices, breed improvement, and disease control measures to increase productivity.
With the renewed focus on livestock development, experts believe that Nigeria’s livestock sector could emerge as a multi-billion-dollar industry, creating jobs and strengthening the country’s economy.
