Aiyedatiwa Elevates Ondo Polytechnic to Agricultural University Status

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has given the green light for the transformation of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, into a University of Agriculture and Agribusiness.

This move revises an earlier plan by the previous administration, which had proposed upgrading the institution into a University of Management Science and Technology.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, highlighted that the new institution would play a key role in advancing the state’s agricultural and food security initiatives. Aiyedatiwa also announced that a committee would be established to oversee the transition process, ensuring that students and staff are not negatively impacted.

The governor also approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and a private investor for a N15 billion youth-centered agricultural initiative. The agreement, signed with AgroMall Discovery and Extension Limited, focuses on the Young Ranchers Agricultural Cluster Development Programme.

According to the statement, the initiative will be hosted by three institutions, including the newly designated Rufus Giwa University, providing young people and agriculture students with hands-on farming experience. The programme will not only offer training but will also generate revenue for the participating institutions.

In addition to the agricultural initiative, Aiyedatiwa sanctioned another MoU with BBA Consult for the creation of a secure ICT system aimed at improving state resource management and boosting internally generated revenue. The agreement follows a build, operate, and transfer model, ensuring a sustainable approach to state financial reforms.

These initiatives align with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen the agricultural sector, enhance educational opportunities, and modernize state resource management. The implementation of these plans is expected to drive economic growth and create new opportunities for Ondo State residents.
