The Ekiti State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving livestock productivity by prioritizing animal health and building the capacity of its workforce. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, emphasized the importance of the livestock sector in enhancing food security and economic growth.
To achieve this goal, the government has partnered with the World Bank's Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) to train top veterinary officers, para-veterinarians, community animal health workers, and livestock officers on effective disease surveillance and protection. The training aims to equip animal health professionals with the skills necessary to ensure healthy consumption of animals by the people.
The Commissioner noted that effective disease surveillance training aligns with the state's commitment to prioritizing animal health and food security. He emphasized that diseases play a significant role in reducing the productivity of the livestock sector, affecting international trade, and negatively impacting food and nutrition security.
The state project coordinator, Olayinka Adedipe, provided an overview of the project, which includes resolving farmers-herders clashes through the establishment of a mediation committee among stakeholders. The chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Ekiti chapter, Ayodeji Ojo commended the efforts of the present administration in enhancing livestock production, stating that the investment will soon be felt in the economy.
A resource person, Dr. Emmanuel Awosanya from the University of Ibadan's Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and stakeholders to ensure a healthy and productive livestock sector in the state.
This training is a significant step towards improving livestock productivity and ensuring food security in Ekiti State. By empowering animal health professionals, the government is demonstrating its commitment to the well-being of its citizens and the development of its economy.
