The Jigawa State Government has warned livestock traders, transporters and poultry sellers against mistreating animals, saying offenders could face fines and prosecution.
The warning was issued by the Director of Livestock Extension at the state Ministry of Livestock Development, Mudansir Habib, during an awareness campaign at Shuwarin Weekly Market to mark Global Animal Welfare Week.
Habib urged livestock transporters moving animals from northern Nigeria to the southern part of the country to ensure proper handling and prevent unnecessary suffering. He also cautioned poultry sellers against carrying birds upside down or handling them carelessly.
He said the campaign would extend to livestock markets across the state, with stricter enforcement against those who violate animal welfare guidelines.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the West African Rearers Association, Mustafa Andaza, welcomed the initiative, saying it would help educate traders and discourage harmful practices. The campaign aims to improve animal welfare and promote livestock productivity in Jigawa State.
