Jigawa State Government has signed a 10-million-dollar joint venture agreement with India’s Srinivasa Farms Private Limited to establish a modern poultry hatchery aimed at improving the supply of day-old chicks to farmers.
Under the agreement, Srinivasa Farms will own 60 per cent of the venture, while the state government will hold the remaining 40 per cent. The proposed facility is expected to be the first modern hatchery of its kind in Northern Nigeria.
Governor Umar Namadi said the investment would support poultry farmers, improve food security and create opportunities for young people. The partnership will also provide training, technical guidance and business support to smallholder farmers.
Srinivasa Farms Vice-President, Senthil Kumar Krishnan, said the hatchery would help address challenges caused by transporting chicks from distant locations, including Kaduna. He said local production would improve access to quality chicks and reduce transportation-related problems.
Jigawa Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Salim Abdurrahman Lawal, said the facility would reduce delivery distances, with no location in the state expected to be more than about 150 kilometres away.
The state government also plans to establish delivery facilities and introduce support measures for poultry farmers.
