The Taraba State Government has launched a statewide artificial insemination programme to improve cattle genetics and increase livestock productivity.
The initiative is being implemented under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, L-PRES, in partnership with Livestock Genetic Africa.
Speaking at the launch, L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Hananiah G. Albert, said the programme would give farmers access to improved cattle genetics without the cost of keeping breeding bulls.
He said quality semen could help improve milk production, growth rate, fertility, disease tolerance, adaptability and overall cattle productivity.
Albert said the programme would be carried out through livestock clusters and other selected locations across the state, with animal health and husbandry personnel providing technical support.
He urged farmers to make their cattle available at the required time, provide accurate information and follow professional guidance.
Chairman of the Taraba State Livestock Development Commission, TALDEC, Dr Dauda Abubakar M., said the programme could increase milk and meat production and improve farmers’ incomes.
He called on livestock keepers to participate, stressing that the success of the initiative would depend on cooperation among government agencies, technical experts, livestock associations and farmers.
The programme is expected to support long-term genetic improvement and strengthen cattle production across Taraba State.
