A Brazilian investor, Roberto Fonseca Janete da Fonseca, has announced plans to invest in Delta State’s cattle and beef value chain following discussions with the state government. Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026, he said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s visit to Brazil last year opened the door for talks that led to his delegation’s visit to the state. He said the company is ready to partner with Delta State by bringing Brazil’s experience in livestock production and beef processing.
Fonseca said Nigeria has similar climatic conditions to Brazil, which has supported the growth of its cattle industry. He noted that while Brazil has about 200 million cattle for a population of 200 million people, Nigeria has an estimated 20 million cattle, making investment in breeding, productivity and sustainability necessary.
He said the proposed investment would cover the entire livestock value chain, including cattle breeding, slaughterhouses, beef processing plants, cold storage facilities, refrigerated transport and distribution. According to him, the partnership would help reduce production costs, lower beef prices and improve the efficiency of the livestock sector.
Fonseca also said Nigeria’s beef market has strong growth potential, with annual per capita beef consumption estimated at about six kilograms compared with about 30 kilograms in Brazil. He added that strengthening the livestock value chain would improve food security, create jobs and position Nigeria to supply beef to neighbouring countries through regional exports.
