The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has partnered with the Pan African Vision for the Environment (PAVE) to train poultry farmers on climate-smart waste management aimed at reducing methane emissions.
The one-day training, held at the Aiyedoto Poultry Estate in Ojo, brought together 33 livestock farmers to learn practical methods of managing poultry waste in environmentally sustainable ways. The programme focused on improving manure management to reduce methane emissions, a greenhouse gas released when untreated poultry waste decomposes under low-oxygen conditions.
Experts introduced participants to techniques such as accelerated aerobic composting, safe biological treatment of poultry manure and small-scale biogas production. The training was facilitated by the Renevlyn Development Initiative under the ZeroWaste Ambassadors Project and forms part of the Multi-solving Action to Methane Reduction in Nigeria project.
PAVE President Anthony Akpan said proper management of poultry waste can produce organic fertiliser, reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers, improve soil fertility and support climate goals. Farmers at the estate welcomed the initiative, saying it would help reduce odours, insect infestations and waste build-up. Estate Chairman Folusho Adams also called for support to restore faulty composting equipment to improve manure processing at the facility.
