Kenya Secures Right to Host 2028 World Veterinary Congress

Kenya has won the bid to host the 2028 World Veterinary Association Congress, becoming the first African country to stage the global event. The announcement is being viewed as a major milestone for the country's veterinary and livestock sectors.

The congress is expected to bring together more than 2,000 delegates, including veterinarians, researchers, policymakers and industry leaders from around the world. Discussions will focus on animal health, disease prevention, food safety and developments in veterinary medicine.

Kenya also earned international recognition after veterinary surgeon Dr. Josiah Mandieka received the World Veterinary Association Award for Veterinary Medicines Stewardship. The award recognises his work in promoting the responsible use and regulation of veterinary medicines.

Officials say the recognition strengthens confidence in the quality and safety of Kenya's meat, milk and other livestock products. They believe hosting the congress will create opportunities for investment, tourism, knowledge sharing and growth in the livestock industry.

Veterinary professionals have, however, called for stronger enforcement of regulations governing veterinary medicines to protect animal and public health. They say maintaining high standards will help Kenya maximise the benefits of hosting the global congress and strengthen its position in international livestock trade.
