Shield Africa Sustainability and Development Initiative has graduated participants of its 2025/2026 Farmers' Academy in Benue State. The beneficiaries completed a six-month free training in fish production and management.
The programme was organised in partnership with the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi. It targeted youths and women from Oju Local Government Area to improve food production and reduce unemployment.
President of Shield Africa, Mrs. Osenaga Orokpo, represented by the organisation's Head of Operations, Mr. Prince Umobuarie, said the academy equips participants with practical farming and business skills to help them establish successful agribusinesses. She urged the graduates to use the training to create jobs and improve livelihoods in their communities.
Participants received practical lessons in fish production, farm management, water quality management and agribusiness development. The organisation also presented start-up support, including fingerlings and financial assistance, to help the beneficiaries establish fish farms immediately after graduation.
Some beneficiaries, including Edigbo Peret and Odigiri Victor, thanked Shield Africa for the opportunity and pledged to apply the skills and support received to build successful fish farming businesses and contribute to food production and economic growth. Stakeholders at the event said such programmes play an important role in reducing unemployment and improving agricultural productivity in rural communities.
