The Plateau State Government has commenced the construction of a modern abattoir and veterinary hospital in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, alongside the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar-Maiha, performed the foundation-laying ceremony for the two projects.
According to the governor, the abattoir will process 500 cattle and 200 tonnes of poultry daily when completed. He added that the projects are expected to create between 7,000 and 10,000 jobs for residents.
Mutfwang said the investment is aimed at strengthening the livestock value chain, increasing internally generated revenue and supporting economic growth in the state. He noted that the facility is expected to be completed within one year.
The governor explained that the veterinary hospital will serve as an inspection point for animals before slaughter and will also provide treatment services and training opportunities for future professionals.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar-Maiha commended the Plateau State Government for supporting the Federal Government's livestock development agenda.
He said the modern abattoir would improve meat processing standards, strengthen supply to local markets and create opportunities for Nigeria's red meat industry to access export markets.
Officials said the projects are expected to improve public health, support livestock producers and enhance the overall meat value chain in the country.
