Lincolnshire Farmer Given Suspended Jail Term, Banned from Keeping Livestock

A farmer from Lincolnshire has received a suspended prison sentence and a lifetime ban on livestock ownership after admitting to multiple animal welfare and deadstock disposal offences.

David Coulson, 61, of Market Rasen, pleaded guilty to 10 offences following an investigation by Lincolnshire County Council Trading Standards and the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

Inspectors who visited the farm between 2022 and 2024 found large numbers of animal remains, including carcasses, bones and skulls, across fields and farm buildings. Authorities said some remains were located in areas where livestock were grazing, creating risks to animal health and the food chain.

Further inspections found sheep suffering from severe neglect, including lameness, poor body condition and untreated illnesses. Several animals had to be euthanised to prevent further suffering.

The investigation also revealed that dead animals had not been disposed of according to legal requirements. The court heard that Coulson had previously received advice and warnings on animal welfare and disposal rules but failed to comply.

At Lincoln Crown Court on May 22, 2026, Judge Sjolin Knight said the welfare problems had continued over a prolonged period. The court sentenced Coulson to 13 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to pay more than £39,000 in costs.

The court also imposed an indefinite ban preventing him from owning, keeping, transporting or dealing in livestock. Officials said the case highlights the importance of maintaining animal welfare standards and complying with livestock management regulations.
