The Federal Government has begun validating the National Livestock Information Management System, a digital platform designed to serve as Nigeria’s central database for livestock information.
Speaking during the exercise in Abuja, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, said the platform will help address longstanding gaps in livestock data and support better planning across the sector.
Represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Stephen Ohaeri, she said the lack of a unified data system has made it difficult to effectively track animal populations, production activities, markets, animal health, and value chains.
According to her, the new system will bring livestock-related information into a single platform for data collection, analysis, management, and reporting nationwide.
Developers of the platform said it will feature web and mobile-based data collection, integration with existing government databases, and verification processes aimed at improving data accuracy.
They added that information will be sourced from state coordinators, field officers, livestock associations, development partners, and other stakeholders to create a comprehensive national livestock database.
The platform is expected to support policymaking, investment decisions, programme monitoring, and overall development of Nigeria’s livestock sector.
