The Federal Government is seeking access to international climate finance to support sustainable growth in Nigeria’s livestock sector and strengthen its response to climate change.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with representatives of the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, also known as GIZ.
Maiha said climate change is affecting livestock production across the country through reduced water availability, changing rainfall patterns, increased heat stress on animals and shrinking grazing areas. He noted that the ministry is taking steps to improve resilience and productivity in the sector.
According to the minister, ongoing initiatives include the rehabilitation of grazing reserves, expansion of fodder production, improved rangeland management, adoption of renewable energy and promotion of settled livestock production systems.
He added that the ministry is working with local and international partners to develop projects that can attract funding from global climate finance institutions.
Speaking at the meeting, Director of Technical Services at AGNES, David Olufemi Awolala, said the organisation and GIZ are supporting the ministry in developing funding proposals focused on feed and fodder development, livestock value chains and animal health systems.
The proposed projects are expected to attract support from international institutions, including the Green Climate Fund and the African Development Bank, while helping Nigeria advance sustainable livestock development and meet its climate goals.
