The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in partnership with the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan and international partners, has launched a new project aimed at improving the country’s aquaculture sector.
The initiative, known as Sustainable Fish Value Chains for Landlocked Developing Countries, was unveiled during a workshop in Bishkek. Funded by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the project focuses on strengthening the production and marketing of rainbow trout and carp, two fish species seen as having strong growth potential.
The workshop brought together government officials, private sector representatives, researchers and development partners to review findings from a fish value chain study and identify key areas for improvement.
FAO officials said the project is designed to improve food security, create jobs and support rural livelihoods by making fish production and marketing more efficient and sustainable.
Discussions focused on challenges facing the sector, including access to quality inputs, processing, market connections and environmental sustainability. Participants also agreed on the need for stronger cooperation among stakeholders to support future growth.
The project will help develop strategies to improve fish production, processing and market access. Officials said the initiative is expected to increase incomes for fish farmers, create employment opportunities and support the long-term development of Kyrgyzstan’s aquaculture industry.
