Nigeria’s fish production potential is being limited by poor standardisation, weak research linkages and the lack of quality fish seed systems, according to fisheries expert Dr. Adegoke Agbabiaka.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Kenya, Agbabiaka said the absence of certified fish seed production and improved breeding programmes has reduced productivity and discouraged investment in the aquaculture sector.
He noted that many countries, including Ghana and Egypt, have established traceable and standardised fish production systems, while Nigeria continues to rely heavily on imported breeding materials and feed ingredients, increasing production costs.
Agbabiaka called for stronger collaboration among research institutes, universities and government agencies to develop improved fish varieties and locally sourced feed solutions. He said greater investment in research and standardisation is necessary for Nigeria to realise its potential as a leading fish-producing nation in Africa.
