Demand for eggs and poultry meat in the United Kingdom is rising, but industry leaders say producers face major challenges that could limit supply growth.
Speakers at the British Pig and Poultry Fair, held on May 13 and 14, said egg consumption has increased by 20 percent since 2019. They noted that while demand is strong, the UK still consumes fewer eggs per person than many other countries. Industry representatives also said organic eggs, premium golden-yolk brands, and processed egg products such as boiled eggs, omelettes, and liquid eggs are seeing increased sales.
Despite the strong market, producers said proposed plans to phase out colony housing systems and strict planning regulations are making expansion difficult. Officials also raised concerns over rising imports of eggs from Ukraine, warning that local producers may struggle to compete if imports are not held to the same standards as domestic production.
Industry leaders said government policies remain a challenge, citing inconsistent regulations across agriculture, employment, tax, health, and environmental sectors. They said the lack of coordination between departments is creating uncertainty for producers and limiting investment.
Avian influenza was identified as another major concern. Producers said stronger biosecurity measures are being introduced, but stressed that staff training and compliance remain critical. They also expressed cautious optimism about ongoing vaccine trials in turkeys, saying a successful rollout could help protect the wider poultry sector in the future.
At the fair, producers said many farms are ready to invest in expansion, but planning approvals and stable cash flow remain key obstacles. They also called for easier access to food service and public procurement markets, saying local poultry products should have a greater role in schools and public institutions.
