The Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Ursula Akanwa, has called on newly inducted veterinary doctors to uphold the ethics and core values of their profession.
She made the call during the induction and oath-taking ceremony of 48 veterinary graduates held by the university in partnership with the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Professor Nneoma Obasi, Akanwa said the role of veterinary doctors goes beyond animal care and includes safeguarding food safety and public health.
She said the ceremony marked the graduates’ transition into professional practice and reminded them of their responsibility to protect animal health and support the country’s food system.
The vice chancellor also said the university remains committed to producing graduates with both professional competence and good character, noting that veterinarians play an important role in agricultural development and national food security.
She thanked the Veterinary Council of Nigeria for granting full accreditation to the university’s veterinary programme and acknowledged the support of industry partners in providing practical training for students.
At the event, the Veterinary Council of Nigeria presented practising licences to the 48 new veterinary doctors.
The council’s president, Mathew Adamu, and acting secretary, Oladotun Fadipe, congratulated the graduates and commended the university for consistently producing qualified veterinary professionals.
