The Federal Government says it has set a target to grow Nigeria’s livestock sector from an estimated 32 billion dollars to 74 billion dollars over the next 10 years.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this in Abeokuta during the annual convention of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Alumni Association. He said the plan is based on the National Livestock Transformation Plan and new financing initiatives.
According to the minister, the African Development Bank is supporting the programme with 300 million dollars for feed production, animal health services, breed improvement, and rural infrastructure.
He added that Nigeria’s participation in the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones Programme has attracted more than 530 million dollars in investment to Ogun State.
Maiha said the creation of a dedicated livestock ministry by Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aimed at expanding opportunities in meat, dairy, poultry, and other livestock value chains.
He also said a 20 million dollar grant from development partners will support the school feeding programme to improve child nutrition and provide a stable market for local producers.
