The Anambra State government has introduced a new burial law that bans the presentation of cows, goats and other livestock as condolence gifts during funeral ceremonies. The new policy is part of efforts to regulate burial practices across the state.
Under the law, burials will now be held only on Fridays and Saturdays, while wake-keep events are limited to one night. The state government said the measures are aimed at reducing excessive spending and checking practices linked to elaborate funeral ceremonies.
The law also stops the public presentation of cows, goats and similar gifts to bereaved families during condolence visits. Authorities said the guidelines are meant to promote modest funeral arrangements and reduce financial pressure on families.
The policy has drawn public attention as residents react to the changes, which affect burial customs in many communities across Anambra State. The government said enforcement of the new rules will begin immediately.
