The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a specialized livestock training academy in Taraba State. The initiative follows a proposal by an international dairy company to support skills development and improve livestock production in the state.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during a visit to Jalingo, where he met with Governor Agbu Kefas alongside investors and technical partners. Discussions focused on creating a training centre that will combine classroom learning with practical farm experience.

Maiha said the lack of formal training institutions has slowed progress in the livestock sector, with many farmers still using outdated methods. He noted that modern livestock farming requires technical knowledge and structured training to increase productivity and attract investment.

The proposed academy will cover key areas such as animal health, breeding, feed production, milking, and hygiene practices. It will also include an integrated farm to support hands-on learning.

The minister said Taraba was chosen because of its agricultural potential, especially the Mambilla Plateau, which has suitable climate conditions, large grazing areas, and a significant cattle population.

An international dairy expert involved in the project said a technical team will soon begin site assessments as part of the next stage.

Governor Kefas welcomed the plan and reaffirmed the state’s readiness to work with investors. He said Taraba has the resources needed to meet growing demand for livestock products if properly developed.

The governor also noted that recent reforms in the livestock sector at the national level have increased attention on the industry. He assured investors of a stable environment, adding that security challenges in some areas are being addressed.

Kefas expressed confidence that the academy will create jobs, build skills, and strengthen Taraba’s position in livestock production.
