Ghana Egg Supply Surges as Burkina Faso Export Halt Continues

Egg sellers and poultry operators in Ghana are calling on the government to engage authorities in Burkina Faso over a suspension of egg exports that has lasted more than two months.

The restriction has led to excess supply in the local market, especially in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, where traders say unsold stock is increasing. The concerns were also raised at a recent press briefing by the Poultry Farmers, Egg Sellers, and Exporters Association in Dormaa Ahenkro.

Industry sources say the export halt is linked to health concerns following Ghana’s earlier bird flu outbreak. They note that the issue has not yet been formally resolved through an official government position.

The situation has created a glut in the market, putting pressure on farmers and traders dealing in eggs, which spoil quickly if not sold on time.

An egg supplier in Koforidua, Abena Amankwaa, said prices have already dropped, with a crate selling between 50 and 55 Ghana cedis. She warned that prices may fall further as sellers try to reduce losses.

Some buyers, however, say the lower prices are helping them cut costs. A baker, Rebecca Gyan, said she can now buy more eggs, which improves the quality of her products. Some households also say the price drop is helping them afford more protein.

Despite this, industry operators are urging the government to resolve the trade issue quickly, warning that continued restrictions could lead to more losses and waste.
