FG Unveils Plan to Reduce Poultry Costs Across Nigeria

The Federal Government says it is taking steps to bring down the rising cost of poultry products and improve supply across the country.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, made this known during a meeting with the Poultry Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Sunday Ezeobiora, in Abuja on April 27, 2026. He said the government will focus on reducing key production costs, including feed, energy, and other inputs, while increasing support for small-scale farmers.

The Minister added that the proposed “Feed the Hungry Children” programme is expected to increase demand for eggs and processed poultry, creating more market opportunities for producers. He also called for improved transparency in the industry and asked the association to provide a detailed national list of hatcheries, including their locations and production capacity.

Maiha said better data will help the government design targeted support, address supply gaps, and balance production with national demand. He noted that efforts are also underway to lower input costs through energy solutions and easier access to essential imports, while maintaining quality standards.

In response, the Poultry Association of Nigeria raised concerns about high feed costs, limited access to finance, disease control challenges, and shortages of pullets. The association commended the government’s efforts and pledged to work closely with authorities to strengthen poultry production and improve food security.
