Mozambique Sets 549,533 Tonnes Fish Production Target for 2026 Season

Mozambique has set a target of 549,533 tonnes of fish production for the 2026 fishing season, representing a 0.3 percent increase compared to the previous season.

Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries, Momade Juízo, announced this in Beira during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Fishing Season, held under the theme “For Developed, Responsible and Sustainable Fishing and Aquaculture.”

According to him, projected production includes 25,925 tonnes from industrial and semi-industrial fishing, 512,964 tonnes from small-scale fishing, and 10,644 tonnes from aquaculture.

Juízo said the previous fishing season recorded about 518,000 tonnes of fish production valued at around 34 billion meticais, with exports reaching about 8,000 tonnes of fish products.

He noted that the small-scale fishing subsector contributes more than 90 percent of total fish production in the country.

The government plans to approve and implement local fish management plans in Sofala Province, including Machanga, and in Nampula Province, covering Memba, Ilha de Moçambique, Nacala and Mogincual.

The initiative is aimed at supporting community-managed fishing areas and improving fish resources in those locations.

Juízo also said the government is expanding aquaculture through financing across the value chain, establishment of demonstration production units, and strengthened technical support and training for fish farmers.

He added that measures will also include certification of broodstock, fingerlings and feed, as well as faster licensing for aquaculture activities.

The government is also seeking investment for fishing and aquaculture projects, with some international banks already showing interest in financing the sector.

During the event, aquaculture inputs including feed and fingerlings were provided to two fish farmers in Nhamatanda and Dondo to help address losses caused by floods.

Twelve motorbikes were also handed over to extension workers from Búzi, Machanga, Muanza and Beira under the Resilient Fisheries Development Project, known as ProPeixe.
