Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Idi-Maiha, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from Heifer International led by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Surita Sandosham. He said the government is working to build a modern and sustainable livestock economy that supports farmers and attracts private investment.
Idi-Maiha said achieving this goal requires technical expertise, innovation and long-term partnerships. He noted that collaborations with international organisations, including Heifer International, have supported several livestock projects in the country.
According to the minister, the projects include micro-livestock hubs, irrigation-supported fodder fields and veterinary training programmes for young Nigerians.
Sandosham commended the ministry for prioritising livestock development as part of national economic security. She said Heifer International plans to reach more than two million Nigerian households by 2030 through programmes that support sustainable incomes, precision breeding and improved grazing systems.
She also cited projects in Adamawa, Taraba and Edo states where artificial insemination and solar-powered irrigated fodder systems are helping increase milk production and support smallholder farmers.
Both the ministry and Heifer International said they will continue expanding the programmes across the country to strengthen livestock production and improve livelihoods in rural communities.
