Nigeria has reported six new cases of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in poultry between early December and mid-January. The information was submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health.
Three cases were found on commercial farms with between 3,000 and 6,500 birds in Ogun, Kano and Katsina states. The remaining cases involved backyard poultry flocks in Kano and Plateau states.
Since the virus was first detected in Nigeria in December 2020, a total of 497 poultry flocks have tested positive. More than 2.53 million birds have been directly affected.
From January to April 2025, the country also recorded 18 outbreaks affecting about 93,500 birds, including cases in Kano, Katsina, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna and Zamfara.
