Livestock Ministry Partners Global Banks on Climate Action Plan

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has partnered with the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank to address climate change in Nigeria’s livestock sector. The partnership aims to support sustainable growth, protect livelihoods and improve food security.

The collaboration was announced in Abuja yesterday. It will focus on climate-smart livestock practices, measuring methane and nitrous oxide emissions, and strengthening national data systems for policy planning. Permanent Secretary, Dr Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, said climate variability is affecting animal health, feed supply, water availability and productivity.

Dr Alike Peter, Team Lead of the Ministry’s Technical Working Group on Climate Change, said the effort supports the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which targets an increase in the sector’s GDP contribution from 32 billion dollars to 74 billion dollars within ten years.

World Bank representative Dr Harrison Charo Karisa pointed to opportunities in climate-smart aquaculture, blue economy initiatives such as seaweed farming, and carbon markets linked to methane reduction. AfDB’s Dr Youssouf Kabore pledged support for practical and scalable interventions.

Representatives from GIZ, Netzence Sustainability Limited and 3logy Limited also attended the meeting. Officials say the collaboration will support Nigeria’s climate commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions while promoting responsible livestock practices and economic opportunities for youth and women.
