The Veterinary Council of Nigeria Hosts Annual Staff Retreat to Boost Livestock Sector

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria will hold its second annual staff retreat in Abuja from January 26 to 28, 2026, aiming to strengthen animal health regulation and support the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The three-day event will bring together the Council’s professional staff to review achievements from 2025 and prepare for the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2026–2030. The retreat follows significant reforms, including updates to the Community Animal Health Curriculum, amendments to the Veterinary Surgeons Act, and the Council’s first-ever staff retreat, all supported by Propcom+.

Acting Registrar Dr Oladotun Ebenezer Fadipe said the retreat will help staff translate policies into measurable outcomes in livestock productivity, public health, and disease control. He explained that aligning the Council’s work with the Nigerian Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy will reinforce its role in regulating veterinary education and practice, safeguarding food safety, and improving public health.

Deputy Registrar Dr Helen Ego Oputa-Chime highlighted the critical link between animal health and human health, noting that over 75 percent of human illnesses are connected to animals. She added that stronger regulation of veterinary practices ensures healthier livestock, safer food, higher productivity, and greater export potential.

The retreat is expected to host senior government officials, regulators, industry stakeholders, and development partners, reflecting the Council’s central role in advancing Nigeria’s livestock sector and supporting national economic growth.
