Pig Farmers Seek Government Support to Strengthen Value Chain

Governments at all levels have been urged to improve access to land, finance and other key resources for pig farmers to strengthen production and develop the sector’s value chain. The call was made by the Pig Farmers Association of Nigeria, which said pig farming continues to receive limited policy attention compared with other livestock subsectors.

The association said pig production should be recognised beyond pork consumption, noting that the sector has wider economic value. It stated that pig farmers rely on the same feed inputs as poultry and cattle producers but benefit from fewer targeted interventions, and called for livestock policies that give pig farming equal consideration.

Nigeria remains Africa’s largest producer of pigs, according to the association, which said better government support would improve job creation, youth and women participation, and foreign exchange earnings. It added that pig farming supports related industries such as leather production, cosmetics, manure for crop farming and biogas, and said stronger backing would allow the sector to contribute more to employment and exports.
