FG reaffirms support for AFAN as Nutrition 774 puts farmers at centre stage

Vice President Kashim Shettima has restated the Federal Government’s commitment to Nigerian farmers, assuring the All Farmers Association of Nigeria of continued support as the country confronts food insecurity and malnutrition.

The pledge was delivered at the close of the three-day General Assembly of Farmers meeting in Abuja, where Shettima, represented by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Uju Rochas-Anwukah, linked farm productivity directly to the nation’s nutrition outcomes.

Rochas-Anwukah said the Nutrition 774 Initiative positions farmers as the starting point of Nigeria’s nutrition response, arguing that malnutrition cannot be reduced without reliable food production at community level. She said the programme connects agriculture with health, education and livelihoods, shifting attention from treatment to prevention.

She described agriculture as a core pillar of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it plays a direct role in food availability, community stability and national recovery. According to her, policies that overlook farmers weaken the entire food system and delay progress on nutrition targets.

The federal government, she said, intends to keep farmers central to its planning and implementation, with AFAN expected to remain a key partner as nutrition and food security programmes roll out across the country.
