Cameroon has stopped importing chicken and pork, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taïga, announced on 27 January 2026.
The minister made the statement at the opening of the ministry’s annual conference of central and devolved services in Yaoundé. He said the country is no longer spending foreign exchange on chicken and pork cuts, with only small quantities of processed products still being imported.
Dr Taïga described 2026 as a year of consolidation for the import-substitution policy. He said results recorded in 2025 showed the strategy was effective. “Cameroon no longer imports chicken cuts and pork cuts, apart from a few processed products,” he said.
The minister attributed the progress to coordination between public authorities and private-sector operators. He said further efforts would focus on improving production techniques, expanding aquaculture and strengthening continuous training for producers.
He said the government has allocated FCFA 12.5 billion in 2026 to support livestock, fisheries and animal production projects. The funding will be used to modernise training centres, strengthen incubation hubs and improve data collection systems.
Officials said the conference reviewed progress under the National Integrated Import-Substitution Plan and assessed ministerial programme performance.
