Lagos Poultry Farmers Signal Festive Price Drop for Eggs and Chicken

Poultry farmers in Lagos say residents should expect cheaper eggs and chicken this festive season, thanks to the Lagos State Government’s renewed support under the “Ounje Eko” Phase 2 subsidy programme. The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos Chapter, believes the initiative will ease the financial pressure on farmers and translate directly into lower market prices

PAN Vice President and Chairman of the Aiyedoto Poultry Farmers Settlement, Foluso Adams, explained that the subsidy is already reducing production costs for many farmers. According to him, the new support package from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems is arriving at just the right time as the state works to stabilise food prices ahead of the yuletide.

Adams revealed that a crate of eggs, which currently sells for between ₦5,500 and ₦6,000, is expected to drop to around ₦5,100 to ₦5,300 once the subsidy takes full effect. He said farmers have agreed to reflect the relief in their pricing as a direct show of support for the government’s intervention.

He pointed out that the subsidy applies only to the Animal Care brand of feed, meaning not all farmers will benefit. Even so, he encouraged poultry producers who use other brands to take advantage of the opportunity, adding that a formal agreement has already been issued and a meeting scheduled in Alausa to publicly demonstrate the new prices. Fifty farmers from the Aiyedoto settlement are expected to benefit once the first batch of materials arrives on Wednesday.

Adams noted that the subsidy has already stirred competition among feed manufacturers, with some lowering their prices to avoid losing customers. He believes this ripple effect will further help stabilise the poultry market in the state.

He also projected that the price of chicken will drop during the festive season, although talks are still underway to determine the exact reduction. Adams added that if other states adopt similar initiatives, Nigerians across the country could enjoy more affordable poultry products during the yuletide.
