The award ceremony took place in Abuja during the Animal Science Meeting, Induction, and Exposition, jointly organised by NIAS and the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN).
Speaking after receiving the award, Mukhtar described the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a landmark step that has put Nigeria at the forefront of Africa’s livestock transformation agenda. He said the new ministry has sparked renewed global interest and investment in the sector, positioning Nigeria as a key player in animal production and export.
“Nigeria must preserve its native livestock species while boosting productivity to meet our growing demand for milk and meat,” he stated. “Our red meat market alone is valued at over $3.2 billion. With the right strategy, we can feed our 230 million citizens and still have enough to export.”
Mukhtar expressed gratitude to NIAS for the honour, describing it as a reminder of the responsibility to deliver even greater impact. He urged researchers and innovators to channel their discoveries into commercial ventures that can solve real challenges in animal health, feed, and breeding.
Delivering the keynote address, Tunde Amole, Country Representative of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), noted that the livestock sector currently contributes 5.1 percent to Nigeria’s GDP. He called for a mindset shift that turns existing challenges into pathways for sustainable growth and food security.
The event also witnessed the induction of 252 Registered Animal Scientists and five associate members, including Jirgi Dorcas John, Deputy Director of Feed and Fodder at the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. NIAS Registrar, Udo Herbert, and Chairman of the Board of Fellows, Suleiman Elias Bogoro, praised the honourees for their commitment to advancing livestock science and strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural future.
