FG Targets $74 Billion Livestock Economy by 2040

Nigeria is setting its sights on transforming the livestock sector into a $74 billion powerhouse by 2040, as the Federal Government pushes for innovation, investment, and policy alignment across the value chain.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, shared this vision at the 2025 Animal Science Meeting and Industry Exposition in Abuja, describing President Bola Tinubu’s creation of the new ministry as a bold step to reposition livestock as a major driver of GDP growth, food security, and employment. Maiha urged animal scientists to develop improved indigenous breeds capable of meeting global standards in red meat and dairy production.

He said Nigeria’s goal is to breed animals that gain weight faster, mature earlier, and produce higher milk yields, adding that the administration is fully committed to supporting this transformation. The minister, who recently represented Nigeria at international livestock forums, revealed that global partners are showing renewed interest in the sector, particularly in the Gulf red meat market valued at $3.2 billion.

“Our population is not a burden but a blessing,” Maiha said. “We have the talent, market, and political will to turn this sector around. Every Nigerian deserves fresh milk from our cows and prime beef from our herds.”

Delivering the keynote, Tunde Amole projected that with coherent policies, investment, and collaboration, Nigeria could unlock the $74 billion potential by 2040, creating millions of jobs and strengthening food security. He stressed that the livestock sector contributes up to 40 percent of global agricultural GDP, yet Nigeria’s investment remains far below its potential.

President of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Simeon Ohwofa, praised the government for establishing the new ministry, calling it a landmark decision that aligns Nigeria with international best practices. He added that the Institute has already registered about 3,000 animal scientists now working to drive innovation and excellence across the livestock value chain.
