Jigawa Set to Rise as West Africa’s Livestock Processing Hub

A new chapter is unfolding in Jigawa State as plans take shape for a world-class livestock processing plant in Maigatari, a bustling border community with deep commercial roots. The project, spearheaded by Chinese investors in partnership with the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), is expected to transform the state into a powerhouse for livestock production, processing, and cross-border trade.

Governor Umar Namadi, receiving the delegation led by BCDA Executive Secretary Dr. George Kelly and representatives of the Yangpu Global Corporation Forum of China, described the initiative as a lifeline for Jigawa’s economy and a catalyst for prosperity in border communities. He pledged his administration’s full support, assuring investors that Jigawa remains one of the most attractive destinations for business in Nigeria.

The governor highlighted Jigawa’s rich agricultural base and its reputation for hosting one of Africa’s largest livestock markets. He noted that his administration is establishing a Ministry of Livestock Development to unlock the sector’s vast potential, while investment-friendly policies and infrastructure—such as the Dutse cargo airport and expanding rail networks—are positioning the state as a logistics hub.

For Dr. Kelly, Maigatari’s strategic location and vibrant economy made it the perfect choice for the project. He commended Jigawa’s visionary leadership and confirmed that funding from major Chinese banks has already been secured, with investors eager to begin operations.

As the governor emphasized, Jigawa is not just opening its doors to investors—it is building a future where livestock drives food security, job creation, and inclusive growth, setting the stage for the state to claim its place on the global map of agricultural powerhouses.
