Speaking during a high-level meeting with specialists from Protein Trail Limited, Maiha emphasized that capturing detailed, accurate data through ICT tools is the missing link in managing livestock health and ensuring global-standard traceability. With proper tech solutions, every animal’s life—from birth to slaughter—can be documented and tracked, a shift that promises to revolutionize the sector.
He applauded Protein Trail for stepping up with a new application designed to trace livestock across their entire lifecycle. The app records vital statistics such as color, vaccination records, and health history, empowering producers, regulators, and consumers alike with real-time transparency.
Olaseni Salako, Executive Director of Protein Trail, explained how tagging animals and integrating a digital ID system will not only combat issues like cattle rustling but also boost Nigeria’s presence in the international beef market. “Every animal should be traceable from the farm to the abattoir,” he said, highlighting how digital tags and certification can become game-changers in disease control and export readiness.
Beyond beef, Protein Trail has its sights on dairy too. Plans are underway to roll out QR codes on animal products, allowing consumers to scan and instantly verify the origin, safety, and nutritional value of what they’re buying.
With the Ministry pledging support in areas like ranching land, quality feed, and breed improvement, the groundwork is being laid for a future where Nigerian livestock is not just productive—but globally competitive, transparent, and tech-enabled.
