A House of Representatives member, Nnamdi Ezechi, has emphasized the need for the strict enforcement of existing laws that ban open grazing in various states.

During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Ezechi addressed the recent killing of Ogonegbu Chukwunomnazu, a member of a local vigilance group in his constituency. He strongly condemned the incident and stressed the importance of fully implementing anti-open grazing laws.

The lawmaker, who represents Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani, urged the Inspector-General of Police to take swift action in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the crime.

“I call on the Inspector-General of Police to take immediate steps to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous act,” he stated.

Ezechi further appealed to law enforcement agencies to ensure the enforcement of laws—such as the one enacted in Delta State—which restrict open grazing and promote cattle ranching. He argued that no business should operate at the expense of others.

NAN reports that Ezechi had previously brought up the issue in the House through a motion of urgent national importance. In response, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also urged the police and other security agencies to take prompt action on the matter.
