Nigeria’s $1 Billion Leather Industry Stalled by Data Deficiency, 700,000 Jobs Could be Missed - Minister Warns

Speaking on Thursday during a visit by the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Awwal Imam, Maiha emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive statistics to build a thriving business framework for the sector.

With Nigeria’s population exceeding 250 million and an estimated 40 million schoolchildren, the demand for leather products—ranging from shoes to bags—remains substantial. However, without precise data on production capacity, export levels, and raw material availability, the industry’s full potential remains untapped.

Highlighting key areas requiring immediate attention, the minister questioned the current state of Nigeria’s leather production hubs, such as Aba, Nnewi, and Sokoto, and the challenges they face. He stressed the need for data on shoe manufacturers, export volumes, raw material shortages, and market demographics.

Additionally, he underscored the importance of tracking skin collection centers, particularly during peak periods like Sallah, to assess the industry’s revenue prospects. With the right investments and proper data-driven planning, Maiha projected that Nigeria’s leather sector could create over 700,000 jobs. Dr. Imam echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the industry’s significance in boosting export earnings and fostering economic sustainability.

He outlined potential collaborations with the ministry, including implementing the National Leather and Leather Products Policy, strengthening research and training at NILEST, and refining the country’s leather value chain.
