A mysterious poultry disease has struck farms in Telangana, causing alarm among authorities and farmers after 2,500 chickens died within three days in Konnur, Madanapuram Mandal, Wanaparthy district.
The outbreak was first detected at Premium Form, an integrated poultry farm owned by Shivakehavulu, with a capacity of 5,500 birds. The farm reported gradual but alarming fatalities, with 117 chickens dying on February 16, followed by 300 on February 17, and the remainder perishing on February 18.
Concerned by the rapid spread, officials from the District Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department visited the farm and collected samples for laboratory testing on February 19. Meanwhile, containment measures have been swiftly implemented, with authorities establishing red and surveillance zones to curb further infections.
This is not the first poultry crisis in the region. Reports indicate that more than one lakh hens were culled by February 14, raising fears of a larger underlying health threat. Authorities are now working to determine whether the outbreak is linked to avian influenza (bird flu) or an unidentified poultry disease.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and awaiting laboratory results to confirm the cause,” said K. Venkateshwar, District Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Officer of Wanaparthy.
With poultry farming playing a significant role in Telangana’s economy, farmers are anxiously awaiting answers. The state government has assured that strict biosecurity measures will be enforced to prevent further losses and protect the industry from potential devastation.
