Kansas City Farmers Struggle to Shield Livestock from Record-Breaking Cold

As record-breaking cold temperatures sweep through Raymore, Missouri, farmers like Kenny Pfeiler are working tirelessly to keep their livestock safe from the brutal conditions.

“When it gets this cold, there’s a lot more to do,” Pfeiler explains, standing outside his barn, where he raises chickens, turkeys, hogs, and cattle. “We need to make sure the animals stay dry and protected from the wind chill.”

Just two miles from Raymore City Hall, the Pfeiler family farm is feeling the full force of the cold snap. Ivan, one of their playful cows, stands near the barn, his whiskers dusted with frost. “Keeping them out of the wind, fed, and watered—that’s the key,” Pfeiler says.

To prevent water from freezing, Pfeiler and his family shut off the water supply to the barn and use electric heaters to keep fresh water available for the cattle, which are bottle-fed twice a day. Their chickens, which usually roam freely, have been moved inside the coop for warmth. “These guys have been cooped up,” Pfeiler jokes.

However, even with careful preparations, some challenges are unavoidable. Frozen eggs and constantly freezing water require frequent attention. “They freeze very quickly,” Pfeiler notes. While the cold helps kill off bugs, it also disrupts the farm’s daily operations.

Despite the added challenges, Pfeiler remains focused on his animals' well-being. “As long as they have shelter, food, and water, they’re happy,” he says. For now, as the bitter cold lingers, the Pfeiler family—like many farmers across Missouri—will continue braving the elements to keep their livestock safe.
