FSIS Extends Comment Period for Salmonella Rule for Poultry in the United States: A Closer Look at the Proposed Changes

The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced an extension of the comment period for its proposed rule aimed at reducing Salmonella contamination in poultry products. The new deadline for public comment is now January 15, 2025, giving stakeholders an additional 72 days to provide their input on the proposed changes.

The proposed rule, published on August 23, 2024, seeks to reduce the risk of Salmonella contamination in poultry products by implementing new performance standards for poultry slaughter establishments. The rule would require these establishments to implement additional controls to prevent contamination, including improved sanitation, better handling of poultry products, and enhanced testing for Salmonella.

The FSIS is seeking comments from the public, industry stakeholders, and other interested parties on the proposed rule, which would apply to all poultry slaughter establishments in the United States. The agency is particularly interested in comments on the proposed performance standards, the effectiveness of the proposed controls, and any potential impacts on small businesses and rural communities.

The proposed rule is part of the USDA's ongoing efforts to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness in the United States, with an estimated 1.35 million cases reported annually.

The FSIS has stated that the proposed rule is expected to reduce the incidence of Salmonella contamination in poultry products by 50% or more. The agency believes that the proposed controls will help to prevent contamination at the source, reducing the risk of foodborne illness for consumers.

The comment period extension provides an opportunity for stakeholders to provide their input on the proposed rule and help shape the final regulation. The FSIS is encouraging all interested parties to submit their comments by the new deadline of January 15, 2025.
