Boosting Food Production in Maiduguri, Nigeria: FAO's Efforts to Enhance Livestock Farming in the North East Region

tvcnews

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a comprehensive initiative to boost food production and address the challenges of livestock feed shortages in the North East region of Nigeria. The region has been severely affected by conflict, resulting in a food crisis that has left 4.4 million people in need of assistance, according to a recent report by the World Food Programme.

Livestock farmers in the region have been particularly hard hit, as the shortage of feeds has resulted in the loss of livelihoods for many displaced people. To address this issue, the FAO has organized a training program for government and partner extension staff across the North East region on alternative feed-fodder production.

The training, which took place in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to develop sustainable and resilient livestock farming systems. According to the FAO, pasture development is a critical component of livestock production, as it has a significant impact on animal health, productivity, and the overall sustainability of farming systems.

The training program covered a range of topics, including the identification and development of alternative feed sources, such as crop residues, and the use of conservation agriculture practices to improve soil health and reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers. Participants also learned about the importance of integrating livestock production with crop production, and how to design and implement integrated farming systems that are more resilient to climate change and other external shocks.

The FAO's initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the region's food security, as it aims to increase the availability of nutritious food and improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and their families. By enhancing livestock farming in the North East region, the FAO is helping to build a more food-secure and resilient future for the people of Nigeria.
