The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, in Bayelsa, Yenagoa State at the annual Farmers’ Day has promised relief and compensation to farmers nationwide who were affected by floods.
He further stated at the programme organized by the Nigeria AGIP Oil Company that this proposal had been approved by the Presidency when it met with the National Food Security Council. He expressed his goodwill towards the farmers and assured them that ‘relief is on its way.’
The president also showed sympathy towards the farmers who were affected by disastrous floods and reminded them of his administration’s ever-continuing support.
Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said that the President praised the theme of the Farmers’ Day which was “Youths, Agents of Agricultural Development in the Niger Delta.” He explained that as they account for over 60% of the entire Nigerian population and because of the energy and zeal that they possess, youths cannot be sidelined when it comes to agriculture which he described as the ‘bedrock of the Nigerian economy.’
He lamented the under utilization of the resources in the country and explained that his administration is working hard to ensure that the agricultural sector is exploitable by the youths. He urged the youths to make full efforts to participate effectively in agriculture in the country, noting that ‘we cannot continue to import food amidst the abundance in the country.’
He appreciated the efforts the farmers of the country amidst the hardship caused by the floods and promised the continued work of his government particularly in the revival of the River Basin Authorities, and the fulfilling of the compensation pledges made to affected farmers.
