USDA-trained Dog Can Now Perceive Africa Swine Fever

In recent times, the USDA has put in place several measures to prevent from entering the United States of America, and in the case of an outbreak, combat the deadly African swine fever.

These measures include the collaboration with states, imposition of importation bans on countries that have reported cases of African swine fever and most interesting of which is the training of sniffer dogs.

One particular sniffer dog named Hardy, who was trained at the National Detector Dog Training Center in Florida has made the canines proud by sniffing out a roasted pig head from a passenger’s luggage at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport earlier in October.

Like the other members of his team, the Beagle Brigade, Hardy was trained to detect agricultural products travelling across borders that potentially carry deadly diseases.

The US Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue described this feat as a collaboration success and stressed the need to be vigilant against animal diseases and pests. He also mentioned the fact that African swine fever is a deadly disease that affects pig at all levels of age, thus the need to seriously safeguard the American swine and the pork industry at large.
