Consumers in Lithuania and in neighboring country, Latvia have been warned about the ‘safety of food products’ as needles were found in various packaged meat products and fruits in several supermarkets across Lithuania.
Investigations by the State Food and Veterinary Service has revealed that the affected products were distributed by different distributors and were from different companies. Based on this, it is theorized that the needles were introduced ‘either at the warehouse stage or the retail stage’ of production, however monitoring from CCTV has revealed nothing suspicious so far.
Supermarkets and consumers were advised to employ precautions when selling or consuming food products.
